It might not surprise
 you, but in the modern day only 
about 20% of students learn a foreign 
language in the United States. This
 stat is starkly contrasted by a 
whopping 100% foreign language
 study and respective 
bilingual/trilingual status among
students in various parts of Europe.
 Another fascinating detail is that specifically in the US, higher level language programs have been cut almost universally since 2013, with many schools losing funding for this area of study. Naturally, this has created a tough situation for prospective language learners, as many of them have been forced to seek alternative methods to learn languages. Unfortunately, while there are essentially limitless resources to aid in language pursuits, it can be difficult to categorize the usefulness of various learning methods or even have access to that type of conversation with a real person. A 2019 study from Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that when placed in a simple/complex artificial language learning 
environment, students performed better when the language was provided in simple chunks as opposed to complex as we tend to see with many online workbook/auditory type resources.

 

Building on this conclusion, it would seem that language learning apps have provided a substantial alternative to the conventional learning method used in classrooms. Apps such as Duolingo and Babbel have given a proven effective platform with a simple, straightforward approach, but unfortunately are failing to create a more personalized connection to their student base. These apps tend to provide the basis for a student to learn the fundamentals, but do not cover necessary colloquial aspects to each tongue such as humor, music history, pop references, and other cultural elements. Given this dynamic, it’s necessary to explore other possibilities for modern language learning to establish a mode for substantial language acquisition as opposed to conventional language “learning” [and forgetting].
